Miria Kano, PhD, is the Associate Director for the University of Colorado Cancer Center’s Office of Faculty and Staff Relations, and an Associate Professor in the Department of Community and Behavioral Health in the Colorado School of Public Health at the Anschutz Medical Campus. Dr. Kano is a medical anthropologist and holds the Morton Cohen Cancer Center Endowed Chair. Dr. Kano received a bachelor’s degree in University Studies, and a master’s and doctorate in Anthropology from the University of New Mexico.
Dr. Kano’s research focuses on community and implementation science informed health services research to enhance oncology and survivorship healthcare for patients diagnosed with, and/or surviving, cancer. This research seeks to increase understanding of, and develop interventions to, address the complex cancer follow-up care, screening, risk reduction, physical and psychosocial survivorship care needed to promote cancer survivors’ recovery, health maintenance and well-being. This research extends to development of support for the family, friends and partners who serve as caregivers for patients with cancer. By increasing knowledge of the multifaceted, multilevel and interactive effects of social and environmental factors that influence health and healthcare for patients with cancer, this research informs oncology and coordinated care practice changes to facilitate patient-centered and responsive survivorship care that is acceptable and sustainable across diverse clinic settings. Dr. Kano’s research has been funded by the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI), the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and the American Cancer Society.
Dr. Kano likewise brings expertise in population focused cancer prevention and control research and academic leadership education and training for early career investigators and faculty.
