Industrial Hygiene

Program overview

As one of the leading industrial hygiene programs in the country, this program offers opportunities for students to gain useful work experience through class projects at local businesses and knowledge of the field through coursework taught by experienced faculty. The curriculum encourages students to take courses in related disciplines to ensure that they have a broad knowledge base in occupational safety and health fields such as toxicology, occupational health psychology, ergonomics, and safety.

The Industrial Hygiene Program is located at Colorado State University. The Mountain & Plains Education and Research Center (MAP ERC) financially supports qualified students in the program. The MAP ERC is one of 18 National Institute for Occupational Health and Safety (NIOSH) Education and Research Centers in the country. Students supported by the center collaborate with trainees in ergonomics, occupational and environmental medicine, occupational health psychology, and health physics programs on interdisciplinary research, scholarly projects, and in-depth field assessments at local industry sites.

Dr. Van Dyke is an industrial hygienist, researcher, public health practitioner, and educator. He is an associate professor of Industrial Hygiene in the Department of Environmental and Radiological Health Sciences at Colorado State University and a core faculty member of the Mountain & Plains Education and Research Center. His over 20 years of experience has been spent at the academic, community, clinical, and government levels in professional practice, research, education, and policy. Dr. Van Dyke is a Certified Industrial Hygienist and is recognized for his contributions related to exposure assessment, occupational beryllium exposure, first responder exposures in clandestine methamphetamine laboratories, indoor air quality, public health aspects of legalized marijuana, and community exposures related to oil and gas extraction. He has given over 50 scientific presentations at local and national conferences and contributed on over 40 peer-reviewed publications. Dr. Van Dyke is passionate about evidence-based decision-making and risk communication.

Anticipates and recognizes potential hazards in the workplace that cause illness or injury to workers and the public, such as chemicals, noise, biological hazards, and physical hazards
Controls and detects potential hazards with environmental monitoring, engineering, and work practice methods
Works in roles such as occupational health and safety specialist, industrial hygienist, environmental and occupational health manager, health and safety specialist, and consultant

MS or a PhD. There are two options for the Master of Science (MS) program:

Minimum of 35 credits of coursework and a thesis
Minimum of 39-41 credits of coursework, professional paper, and an internship or the internship can be substituted for one year of professional experience in occupational or environmental health-related areas

The MS program is ABET-accredited and designated a Qualified Academic Program by the Board of Certified Safety Professionals for Graduate Student Practitioners. Completion of a master's degree typically takes two years. Completing a PhD typically takes another three to five years after earning an MS.

Students accepted into the CSU Industrial Hygiene Program may qualify for financial support, including tuition, stipends, as well as funding for research and travel, from the MAP ERC for one to three years. Graduate research assistantships are also available on a competitive basis to qualified students. The number of assistantships may vary from year to year depending on the level of research funding.
