About SPARK


SPARK (Short Program for American Indian Alaska Native Knowledge) is a free, online 4-week course that raises awareness of American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) health disparities and public health needs, while promoting interest in the graduate-level Certificate in American Indian and Alaska Native Health program at the Centers for American Indian and Alaska Native Health.

This course was developed to provide accessible education to diverse audiences, fostering understanding and partnerships to address health disparities, while supporting University of Colorado’s strategic goals.

Key Features of SPARK


Audience

SPARK is intended for students (high school and up), university faculty and staff, alumni, state agencies, public health workforce, community members, and others. The content is tailored for a broad educational level.

Structure

The course is conducted virtually via Zoom and is offered twice yearly (Fall & Spring). SPARK follows the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus’s Mini Med School as a model.

Topics

Topics are adapted from the Certificate in American Indian and Alaska Native Health program to provide a high-level overview of AIAN health issues and include:

  • Foundations in American Indian and Alaska Native Health
  • Public Health Through an Indigenous Lens
  • Indigenous Research Methodologies
  • Ethical Considerations/Positive Collaborations
One topic is covered each week, and sessions are led by a panel of community members, healthcare providers, and experts in the topic area.

Fall 2025 courses will begin October 2025.

Spring 2026 courses will begin TBD.

Key Informant Interviews/Focus Groups


In order to ensure that the course fits the needs of the audience, key informant interviews will be scheduled with students and collaborators from partnering institutions to determine key factors such as course topics, format, desired instructors, and more. Interviews/Focus Groups will be no longer than one hour, and participants will be rewarded for their time.
