About the project

This project aims to prevent high concentration cannabis use during pregnancy and the postpartum period through a dual-focus approach supporting both families and healthcare providers in Colorado. The project provides pregnant and postpartum individuals with theory-based educational tools focused on stress management and healthy coping strategies and equips providers with evidence-based materials and communication strategies to effectively identify, advise, and manage perinatal cannabis use in clinical practice.

CME Training: Identification and Management of Perinatal Cannabis Use

We have developed the Identification and Management of Perinatal Cannabis Use - A 5A’s Framework for Patient-Provider Communication in partnership with the Colorado Cannabis Education, Research & Policy Project.

This is a free CME enduring materials training intended for health care practitioners (e.g., Obstetricians, Gynecologists, Midwives, Nurse Practitioners, Nurses, Physician Assistants, Family Medicine Physicians, Pediatricians, etc.) who serve perinatal women.

This training aims to provide educational materials and best practice guidelines to support healthcare providers to identify and manage (i.e., treat or refer to care) perinatal cannabis use among pregnant and postpartum women. This training provides an overview of the risks of perinatal cannabis use on numerous maternal and child outcomes. It is based on the latest research and the current recommendations from leading governing bodies on cannabis use during pregnancy and the postpartum period. It will also enhance patient-provider communication using the 5As framework (i.e., Ask, Advise, Agree, Assist and Arrange) to guide providers to assess for perinatal cannabis use, advise the patient on the health risks and available treatment options, agree on a treatment plan, assist the patient in any problem solving related to obtaining treatment, and arrange for supports for the patient. Providers will learn how to communicate the current national guidelines, safety considerations, and employ brief counseling strategies related to perinatal cannabis use.
