Casebook in Public Health Ethics

The CU Public Health Ethics & Law (PHEAL) Program is proud to announce the availability of this Casebook in Public Health Ethics. The Casebook is authored by Program Director Daniel S. Goldberg, JD, PhD with the support of an Open Educational Resource (“OER”) grant from the Strauss Health Sciences Library.

While there are many teaching casebooks in bioethics and law, very few focus specifically on ethical problems in public and population health. The PHEAL Casebook aims to help fill this gap. By offering the Casebook under an Attribution-Non Commercial 3.0 Unported License (CC BY-NC 3.0), any interested teachers or learners can make use of the Casebook for exploring the rich and diverse field of public health ethics.

Case Topics:

  • Structural Violence & Public Health
  • Surveillance & Public Health
  • Priority-Setting & Public Health
  • The Commercial Determinants of Health
  • Climate, Environment, & Public Health
  • Communicable Disease & Public Health

The Casebook includes short framing commentaries for each category of cases. Each case is accompanied by discussion questions and suggested references.

PHEAL plans to record short “how-to” videos in late 2023 to offer some strategies and approaches for teaching and using the Casebook. These videos will be available on this website and will also be an OER.

PHEAL is eager to receive feedback from end-users to improve the quality of future versions/editions of the Casebook.
