Dr. Luna-Fineman received her medical degree from San Carlos University in Guatemala in 1984 and became board certified in pediatrics at New York University in 1989. She trained in pediatric hematology/oncology at Stanford University School of Medicine and became board certified 1991.

She has been a pediatric oncologist and member of the Children’s Oncology Group, focusing on retinoblastoma, lymphoma and leukemia. In 1999, through a Fulbright Scholarship, she traveled to Guatemala to establish a Pediatric Cancer Center. In association with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, UNOP (Pediatric Oncology National Unit) was established. She developed the retinoblastoma and Hodgkin committees for AHOPCA (Central American Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Association). She helped establish the multidisciplinary care guidelines and practices through Central America, Dominican Republic and Haiti.

Dr. Luna-Fineman served as chair of the adapted-therapy (ATR) committee (one of 11 committees and task forces) at PODC (Pediatric Oncology Developing Countries) at SIOP (International Society of Pediatric Oncology). The ATR committee establishes treatment guidelines for childhood cancer focusing on the infrastructure, personnel and supportive abilities of the center; helping create pathways for improvement of care within the center and regions. She is currently the co-chair of the PODC, SIOP. She is a member of St. Jude Global, and a co-investigator at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, designing the future retinoblastoma prospective studies for LMIC and UMIC throughout Latin America, Southeast Asia, and Africa.
