Addressing and reducing health disparities for Colorado's Latino populations

Advancing Latino public health policy, research, and practice

The Initiative's Mission

The Latino Public Health Initiative (LPHI) is dedicated to increasing collaborative partnerships with community-based organizations, academic institutions, state and local leaders, and other collaborators to address the public health disparities facing Colorado’s Latino community.

What we do

Community Engagement

We collaborate with community organizations to eliminate health disparities affecting Latinos and underserved populations. Currently, our community work focuses on three health needs—cancer, Alzheimer's, and COVID-19 community work.

Research Projects

We collaborate with community organizations to address health disparities affecting populations through responsive research, community outreach, and education. Our work focuses on a number of areas including cancer prevention and treatment, Alzheimer’s and cognitive health, vaccinations, patient navigation, insurance coverage, and diabetes prevention and management. By improving access to care, expanding knowledge, and shaping research initiatives, we strive to enhance the health and well-being in Colorado's Latino communities.

Public Health Practice

ColoradoSPH faculty and staff conduct research to inform policy and public health practice across healthcare, education, and governance. We actively disseminate our findings to engage and inform stakeholders—including policymakers at the city, state, and federal levels, advocacy organizations, and community members—on issues affecting Latinos in Colorado.

Partnerships

We collaborate with nonprofits, healthcare providers, colleges and universities, and others to strengthen community partnerships and expand the reach of the initiative. By fostering these connections, we enhance the Colorado School of Public Health’s impact across the state, ensuring that research, education, and public health practice are included in the community. We strive to form partnerships that provide opportunities for student engagement, opportunities for school research projects, internships, and volunteer initiatives, allowing others to gain hands-on experience while contributing to meaningful public health solutions.
