In recognition of the important work being done to prevent injuries and violence, the mayor of Denver, Colorado has proclaimed November 18 as Injury Prevention Day in the city and county of Denver. The Injury and Violence Prevention Center based at CU Anschutz is joining forces with Injury Free Coalition for Kids, Columbia University Center for Injury Science and Prevention, and other leading injury and violence prevention organizations around the country to recognize National Injury Prevention Day. This annual event raises awareness about the burden of injuries, violence, and opportunities for change in our communities. Cities and organizations around the country will light up “green”, shining a light on and bringing awareness to injury prevention.

Injuries are a significant concern in Colorado and Denver, affecting all people regardless of their age, race, ethnicity, gender, and socioeconomic status. Injuries encompass a wide range of intentional and unintentional events, such as falls, suicide, child maltreatment, firearm injuries, drug overdose, and motor vehicle crashes. The Injury and Violence Prevention Center, based at the Colorado School of Public Health and the University of Colorado School of Medicine, drives evidence-based practice through research discovery and translation, aiming to reduce injuries and their outcomes in Colorado and the Rocky Mountain Region.

To raise awareness in Colorado and to recognize the work done by organizations in our state, the Injury and Violence Prevention Center put in a formal request to the City and County of Denver to officially recognize November 18, 2021 as “Injury Prevention Day”.
